ABOUT THE ARTIST
Roger Phelps studied at Gloucester School of Art. He was called up for National Service in November 1953 was sent sent to Korea as a Cipher Corpora1 with the Royal Signals. He was Stationed in a requisitioned High School in Seoul and later at Edinburgh Camp in Inchon.
The cultural life of the capital was beginning to revive after the war and he and a friend, Eric Hall, discovered the cafe society of Seoul, particularly the Renaissance Cafe where students and others went to hear European Classical music played on records. The drawings are of the Korean friends he made, of street musicians and workers and of the environs of the camps. This is a selection from the forty or so sketches he brought back. On returning to civilian life Roger took up employment as a senior scenic artist with ABC Television, later to be merged with Associated Redifusion to form the very successful Thames Television, where he remained until his retirement. He has for some years been a member of the Surrey West Branch of the BKVA.
